Feeding Cows

I am the daughter of a dad whose passion is raising cows. Our big difference is he stayed on the farm; I moved to the city. I visit frequently, and last week was my most fun visit in quite some time.

Dad was lifting a round bale of hay on to the forklift attached to the back of his Ford tractor, and he invited me to go along to feed the cows. I carefully took his hand and climbed aboard looking for a good foothold. He nodded toward the fender, and that's where I sat. Being careful not to scoot too far back and see those big tires rolling, I fastened my eyes onto the distant pastoral landscape in front of the tractor and held on with two hands. The cows began to follow the bale and soon were trying to eat the hay as the tractor advanced forward to the hillside pasture. It was a rather bumpy ride for an old broad like me.

The hay bale was lowered to the ground, and I took that short pause as a chance to ready my camera. I wanted pictures of cows. The Ford lurched forward and I quickly caught my balance while shooting pictures and a couple of good videos of Dad when he got down to close the gate and to load up a second bale of hay.

As he drove through that last gate on the way back to the house, he turned and looked at me. I smiled, looked back at my 92 year old father and said, "That was really fun!" What greater fun could possibly be had than to feel like the very young daughter on the tractor with Dad again. Time is short, and every experience must be treasured.

We all need to step back sometimes to appreciate the finer thing in our lives. As a farm boy in the 40's and 50's I can relate to the basic passions.
Great intel, hope that you can write more.
Best of luck.

Thank you for sharing this with all of us. Brought back some great memories of my days visiting my grandfather at his farm.

"to feel like the very young daughter on the tractor with Dad again."

Your dad had one of those tractor/time machines then?
